    Status: Available

    Time: 8:00 am (check-in) 8:30 to 12:30 (broadcast)
Assigned Host: Oregon Developmental Disabilities Coalition/ Arc of Oregon
    Presenter(s): Kathy Snow
    Description:

The Oregon DD Coalition is pleased to announce the 2008 Oregon Trainings Series on Direct Supports, which will be hosted by the DD Coalition with funds from the Oregon Department of Human Services, Seniors & People with Disabilities Division.

This the first presentation of the training series, which is targeted to direct support providers and related professionals who support individuals with developmental disabilities. The purpose of the series is to motivate, instruct, network, problem-solve and share best practice. The training series will replace the Oregon Conference on Direct Supports held in Corvallis the past three summers. The change of format is intended to increase the coalition's capacity to train many more individuals than is possible through a single annual conference.

The series will deliver six four-hour teleconferences to a network of host sites throughout the state for the benefit of direct support providers. In addition to featuring nationally-recognized speakers, each remote site will also have a facilitator/site sponsor who will lead the local group in structured activities and discussions. More details to follow soon.

The 2008 Oregon Training Series on Direct Supports has undergone a change this year. We invite you to attend training series that is focused around providing supports in ways that not only enhance the lives of the people you are working for, but also enhance your own life. When a direct support provider is secure, skilled, and happy, support is more successful. Our goal is to help you achieve this condition. Throughout this training series, we will provide focused sessions around topics such as specific disabilities and related best practices, time-saving and enjoyable paths to healthy lives, and how to access resources in the community, and much, much more.

Cost: $15 per session or $60 for six sessions. Online registration is required. See the website link below.

Dual Diagnosis: Mental Illness and Developmental Disability

    Status: Available
    Date: 3/14/2008
Time: 9:00 am to 1:00 pm
Assigned Host: Region I Crisis Diversion Office
Presenter(s): Dr. James Clay, Psy D.
    Description:

Likely more than one third of individuals diagnosed with a developmental disability will also experience symptoms of a mental illness at some point in their life. Unfortunately, these symptoms often look different for people with disabilities than for those without. Symptoms often manifest as violence, self-harm and property destruction and are not adequately identified or treated.

This training provides a basic understanding of how mental illness presents itself for people with developmental disabilities. Special attention is paid to such "diagnostic nightmares" as: Borderline Personality Disorder, Depression, Bi-Polar Disorder and Psychosis. Participants come away better prepared to recognize symptoms of a mental illness in the individuals they serve so appropriate & specialized treatment can be provided because research consistently indicates that early treatment for mental illness shortens the course and reduces the severity of the illness.

The purpose of the series is to motivate, instruct, network, problem-solve and share best practice. The change of format is intended to increase the coalition's capacity to train many more individuals than is possible through a single annual conference.

Challenging Concepts: Supporting Clients With Personality Disorders

    Status: Available
    Date: 9/22/2008
    Time: 9:00 AM – 3:00 PM
Assigned Host: Danville Services of Oregon
Presenter(s): Lonny Webb, Behavior Consultant, Applied Behavioral Concepts LLC
    Description:

People with developmental disabilities may also have co-occurring Personality Disorders. While this issue can be contentious, caregivers who support people with personality disorders and intellectual disabilities need to understand how these disorders interact and the implications for management. For good reasons, the trend in community of caregivers has been to avoid the issue of personality disorders when considering treatment and support option tactics. This presentation will explain the reasons why clinical staff often avoid “Axis II” dilemmas, define prevalent disorders, and address the need for a strategy to help people attain independence.

Oregon Training Series on Direct Support

    Status: Available
    Date: 9/25/2008
    Time: 8:00 am (check-in) 8:30 to 12:30 (broadcast)
Assigned Host: Oregon Developmental Disabilities Coalition/ Arc of Oregon
    Presenter(s): Cathy Ficker-Terrill
    Description:

The Oregon DD Coalition is pleased to announce the 2008 Oregon Trainings Series on Direct Supports, which will be hosted by the DD Coalition with funds from the Oregon Department of Human Services, Seniors & People with Disabilities Division.

This is the fourth presentation of the training series, which is targeted to direct support providers and related professionals who support individuals with developmental disabilities.
