Down Syndrome & Aging

Lori is a very dynamic trainer, known nationwide, and will deliver thoroughly on major issues associated with the aging process and individuals with Down Syndrome. Participants will learn about research, common medical, psychiatric, adaptive and cognitive issues that are either overlooked or incorrectly diagnosed. Differential causes of functional decline will be illuminated to assist direct support staff in supplying information to medical professionals and behavior consultants to assist in accurate diagnostic processes. Participants will learn the hallmarks of dementia and how they are frequently confused with other medical or behavioral conditions. Individuals providing direct supports are encouraged to attend this training due to the invaluable observations they make on a day-to-day basis.

The Oregon DD Coalition is pleased to announce the 2008 Oregon Trainings Series on Direct Supports, which will be hosted by the DD Coalition with funds from the Oregon Department of Human Services, Seniors & People with Disabilities Division.

This the first presentation of the training series, which is targeted to direct support providers and related professionals who support individuals with developmental disabilities. The purpose of the series is to motivate, instruct, network, problem-solve and share best practice. The training series will replace the Oregon Conference on Direct Supports held in Corvallis the past three summers. The change of format is intended to increase the coalition's capacity to train many more individuals than is possible through a single annual conference.

The series will deliver six four-hour teleconferences to a network of host sites throughout the state for the benefit of direct support providers. In addition to featuring nationally-recognized speakers, each remote site will also have a facilitator/site sponsor who will lead the local group in structured activities and discussions. Dual Diagnosis: Mental Illness and Developmental Disability

Likely more than one third of individuals diagnosed with a developmental disability will also experience symptoms of a mental illness at some point in their life. Unfortunately, these symptoms often look different for people with disabilities than for those without. Symptoms often manifest as violence, self-harm and property destruction and are not adequately identified or treated.

This training provides a basic understanding of how mental illness presents itself for people with developmental disabilities. Special attention is paid to such "diagnostic nightmares" as: Borderline Personality Disorder, Depression, Bi-Polar Disorder and Psychosis. Participants come away better prepared to recognize symptoms of a mental illness in the individuals they serve so appropriate & specialized treatment can be provided because research consistently indicates that early treatment for mental illness shortens the course and reduces the severity of the illness.

This course covers basic and intermediate concepts and strategies for understanding and managing potentially destructive behaviors in adults and children with developmental disabilities. Includes the meaning and message of behavior, functional assessment, gathering meaningful data, and formation and use of Behavior Support Plans. VERY HIGLY recommended for anyone to work effectively, safely and humanely with individuals with developmental disabilities and behavior support needs.

Recreation Opportunities for People with Developmental Disabilities

Materials covered: For the first half, agencies will have a chance to speak about the value and importance of recreation and describe what their specific programs have to offer people with disabilities. The remaining time will give the attendees a chance to talk to their specific agencies of choice for more detailed information and collect proper materials.

The Fatal Four

This course addresses the four preventable causes of death for individuals with developmental disabilities, which are: ASPIRATION, CONSTIPATION, DEHYDRATION & SEIZURES. This course is taught by an RN with specialized knowledge of people with developmental disabilities in care settings. The class is appropriate for foster home providers & group home staff or family members with responsibilities for care of individuals with developmental disabilities, especially people with any communication, physical or medical support needs.

Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorders: Hope & Potential

Diane Malbin is the Executive Director of FASCETS, Inc and a nationally recognized trainer and expert on working with people born prenatally exposed to alcohol and other drugs. The theme of this training is about trying differently rather than harder. Why good techniques fail to work and what does -- evidence-based best practices for working with people with Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorders (FASD) and other brain-based conditions in combination with mental retardation.

Behavior 'shaping': A Real Time Demonstration

Lonny will run a fun live experiment in shaping behavior with members of the class, thus demonstrating classic and new techniques in behavior reinforcement. Discussion will focus on how these techniques might be used in real situations supporting individuals we work with (and possibly ourselves?). Class will be experiential as well as scientific/data based.

Sexually Inappropriate Behaviors

A comprehensive introduction to practical realities of meeting support needs of individuals with developmental disabilities prone to exhibiting sexually inappropriate or risky behaviors. Support strategies differentiate between behaviors resulting from a lack of knowledge from those arising from psychological disorders. Dave will present a community based treatment model based on containment, supervision, changing the arousal & behavior, and behavior management. Recommended for caregivers working with sexual offenders or with such risk behaviors in any DD setting.

Oregon Intervention System - General (OIS-G)

Note: This is a two day session, Monday, June 2 and Wednesday, June 4th.

OIS© is a person-centered, non-aversive system of strategies to understand and respond to behaviors respectfully and safely. G Level OIS will include some gentle physical safety techniques appropriate for staff, family members, foster care providers (non-crisis) and other professionals providing support to individuals with developmental disabilities. Higher risks of dangerous behavior may additionally require a Level IF (Individual Focus) or C (Crisis Provider) OIS course or endorsement. Participants in this OIS-G class will receive a temporary certificate at the end of the 2nd day of class and be issued an official OIS© certificate within 2 months of class.

1. How abuse & neglect influence life functioning;
2. How the abuse alters an individual's "world view" & makes them wary, reactive, & challenging to support;

Managing Rude & Difficult Behavior

Dr Leeds has operated a consulting and psychotherapy practice for almost thirty years. His mission is to maximize personal development, and to make a positive contribution to overall health promotion. His work has always served to promote healthy behavioral decisions and positive social environments. Dr. Leeds holds a Bachelors Degree in Psychology and Religious Studies; and both Masters and Doctoral degrees in Psychology. He has been a College Instructor at both graduate and undergraduate levels, and a Licensed Psychotherapist since 1979. He also has presented trainings at the OIS Fall Forum.

This session will focus on vocabulary usable in the worksite and in home environments. This is based on requests from students from the first class. It is preferable, but not necessary, that students have completed Sign Language I or an equivalent.

Diabetes Management

This course is appropriate for foster home providers, group home staff, independent providers and family members with responsibility to care for those with developmental disabilities. The course covers crucial health management techniques and issues for diabetes in individuals with developmental disabilities, plus information and cautionary signs for concern in this population.

Monthly Case Focus: Brain Function Q&A

Group discussion and problem solving session on the general theme of how brain function affects behavior and other support needs of individuals with identified cognitive/developmental disabilities. George will introduce basic brain function concepts and facilitate discussion. We hope this will be an open consultation session. Bring your tough or challenging cases (no names please) and come prepared to listen and exchange positive ideas on this theme.

Brain Injury: The Big Picture

Brain Injury: The Big Picture is an overview and definition of brain injury—both Traumatic Brain Injury (TBI) and Acquired Brain Injury (ABI). The class describes how brain injury can affect a person’s cognitive processing, memory, judgment, and emotion, as well as their life as a whole. Also highlighted are basic approaches to supporting a person with brain injury.

Rondi Grace has worked with the DD population for over 25 years. She began working with individuals with a diagnosis of brain injury in 1989. Rondi has worked for Mentor Oregon since June of 2006. She oversees a 5-person Residential Treatment Home for men who came out of forensic units at the Oregon State Hospital and all are under the PSRB. She is currently developing a 6-person program to open this fall.

Challenging Concepts: Supporting Clients With Personality Disorders

People with developmental disabilities may also have co-occurring Personality Disorders. While this issue can be contentious, caregivers who support people with personality disorders and intellectual disabilities need to understand how these disorders interact and the implications for management. For good reasons, the trend in community of caregivers has been to avoid the issue of personality disorders when considering treatment and support option tactics. This presentation will explain the reasons why clinical staff often avoid “Axis II” dilemmas, define prevalent disorders, and address the need for a strategy to help people attain independence.

Working with Psycho-Social Groups

Train-the-trainer session on dynamics and techniques of running a group focused on the psycho-social needs of adults with developmental disabilities. You may not be ready to run your own group after just this class but will be better able to appreciate the usefulness of the group format, even if it is just to make house meetings and other gatherings more meaningful and beneficial. Interactive session. For instance: How do you support an adult with a developmental disability to establish boundaries with strangers and friends, make healthy decisions in relationships and manage conflict assertively? Val will illustrate a group format as a way to elicit feelings, discuss relationships and explore effective ways to monitor emotions.

Introduction to Developmental Disabilities (The 5 Hour Tour)

New to the field of developmental disabilities (“DD”)? Been around but curious? This is a “whirlwind tour” of the DD field, including: the dramatic history of developmental disabilities; technical definitions; descriptions and visuals of common developmental disabilities; terminology; “People First” language; and a practice “ride” on the Individual Support Plan (ISP) and other essential elements & values of the DD system.
